New Zealand parents enjoy the choice of sending their children to a State school, (including Maori-medium/Maori language schools), a State integrated school, a Charter school or a Private school.
State school properties are owned and funded by the Government, however State Integrated and Private school properties are privately owned or leased, and to supplement Government funding, parents make contributions towards property development and upkeep.
State and State Integrated schools receive staff salary funding.
Charter schools are government-funded, (including staff salaries), but operate independently. They have more freedom to set their own curriculum and teaching methods. Charter schools cannot charge tuition fees to domestic students. However, if they own their property, they may charge maintenance fees, like state-integrated schools.
To get a better idea of how State Integrated Schools came about and operate, here is a brief 11 minute summary of their history.
